In memory of 40 000 elephants!
Truly inspiring! I like the way the story is structured. She did not only look at stereotype from one angle - how her roommate has judged her on the basis of the single story - but also how she has judged Fide's family on the same basis. This truly testifies that stereotypes and biases are everywhere and on all sides. "The problem with stereotypes is not that they are not true, but because they are incomplete." This clearly shows the extent to which we can self construct in a society where we are often judged by the way we talk. Even though much attention has been paid to her different accents, it is important to notice how she accommodates a physical appearance, body movements, and topics of conversation with the concerned accent. And believe me or not, all of us are constantly constructing a different ethos, a different identity through the way we use language circumstance dependent, however on a smaller scale. Truly amazing! This is truly amazing and inspiring. Exploring African Alphabets is something I had not considered as a potential area of research because I have been repeatedly told that we did not have any. One important take-away point from this video is that the whole African continent remains a great potential site for research. Not much literature is available on so many domains and aspects of not only our past, but also our present. It is high time that we, young researchers, turn our gaze toward the continent and write our present and rewrite our history. |
